I Want To Ride My Bicycle
New West Coast CKAP Director

At the request of the current CKAP Board, Ken Bonner, a member of the BC Randonneurs who is welded to his bicycle (28,660km in 2012!), has agreed to be the CKAP West Coast Director until 2015. The CKAP Board thanks Ken for taking on this role in promoting CKAP out west.

Many thanks are also extending to Raymond Parker, who after 7 years as CKAP West Coast Director, decided that it was time to resign. Raymond had continued on as a CKAP director and a member of the BC Randonneurs while overcoming 2 bouts of cancer, but a run in with a car while cycling left him with a serious ankle injury. This has severely limited his cycling, and he felt that it was better to pass the CKAP West Coast directorship to Ken R. Bonner.

Ray (CKAP# 1297) will be greatly missed, since not only did he promote CKAP, but also, as a professional photographer, he kept us supplied with great photos of west coast members. You can visit his web site at:

I Want To Ride My Bicycle Happy New Year, Logging Monthly Totals and New Award Costs
Sat 2013-Jan-05 22:00

  • Happy New Year!: Have a Safe and Enjoyable Cycling Year in 2013!

  • Logs: Now is the time to send in your 2012 CKAP log! The MEMBERS page, by default, just shows the members who have submitted a log for 2012. If you haven't yet submitted yours, you can see your information by either removing the "2012" from the "START YEAR" box or by looking for yourself on the TOTALS page. Note that at the CKAP AGM last May the Ottawa CKAP board voted to allow members to submit monthly rather than weekly totals in their CKAP logs. The choice is yours - monthly or weekly.

  • Award Costs Have Risen: Because of higher costs for the awards and postage, the CKAP Ottawa board voted (by email) to raise the cost of the "MINOR" awards (badges, medals and plaques for up to 25,000 total CKAP km) starting with the 2013 cycling log (year). CKAP has no annual fees and funds raised by the sale of the minor awards in the CKAP incentive program (1,000 km to 25,000 km) helps to pay for the "MAJOR" annual awards. CKAP members receive a free CKAP plaque and certificate for every 100,000 CKAP km that they log. Money from the sale of the minor awards is also used upon occasion to help us maintain the CKAP trophies. This year a new walnut base was added to the Bruce Timmermans 100,000 Km Club Trophy.

Here are the new costs of the minor awards:
    • Badges with certificates will increase by $2.00 ea from $8.00 to $10.00 including postage.
    • Medals with certificates will increase by $2.00 ea. from $18.00 to $20.00 including postage.
    • Plaques with certificates will increase by $5.00 ea. from $35.00 to $40.00 including postage.

I Want To Ride My Bicycle News from the May 9th CKAP AGM
Wed 2012-May-09 19:00

  1. Hewes Challenge Trophy:

To encourage CKAP members to sign up new club member it has been decided to remove both the formula and the average so that club members with lower km totals will also count toward the win for the club and not lower their average in a formula / average win as in the past.

Here are the new changes to the Hewes Challenge award rules:

    • No formula
    • No Average
    • Minimum of 3 CKAP members per club
    • Only one "member's choice" club counts which the CKAP member was a member.
    • Club with the highest total CKAP km wins.

CKAP needs new members paying memberships and awards in the incentive program 1,000 to 25,000 km to help pay for the entire annual major awards which are free and the raising cost of postage if CKAP is to remain in the black and functioning.

  2. Earl Bullis Awards & Engraving is back in business under new management after the untimely death of Gaye Bullis and the search continues for the company which he ordered CKAP medals. James has supplied the artwork for the CKAP medals and if we must we will order from a new company. The 9 members who have not received their 2011 plaques will as soon as the order for 50 plaque CKAP medals is delivered.

  3. CKAP needs to order CKAP short sleeve, hidden 15" zipper jerseys in order to have all sizes available. It has been decided to wait and ask the members who may wish to order a new jersey to inform James by email or post and include their size. If enough interest is shown (12 request or more) James will place an order otherwise he will wait until new members fees can support the cost.

  4. CKAP's director main effort will be to find ways to get new members starting with James entering a CKAP booth in Ottawa's Capital Velofest on June 2nd and it is hoped that each member will make an effort to sign up new members.

  5. James wishes to thank all members who have made donations in the past and in the future which have helped to keep CKAP funded and functioning.

CKAP News 2010-Mar-04

I just wanted to let you know that I now am allowing you to "cycle" through all of the currently databased members pictures from the MEMBERS page. If you click on any member picture shown on that page, you will get further detail on that first picture, and continuing to click on the next picture shown will cycle you through all pictures stored for that person. There is a link under the picture to allow you to send me any details you'd like added to a particular picture. There is some cosmetic work for me to do on this page, and, as I mentioned, I still have 2000+ pictures to database, but I hope that there's plenty enough for you to enjoy right now!

Please let me ( ) know if you notice any errors in the details shown for the member pictures.

CKAP News 2010-Jan-20

After much work (which even had Sir James analyzing old handwritten logs from Tom Parry's days in the 1970's!), we have databased the yearly kilometers ridden by all CKAP members.
  • You may see the member totals by clicking on the TOTALS link in the left margin.

  • You may search for particular entries by typing things into the text boxes at the top of the page and hitting one of the buttons to sort the information however you chooose.

  • You can get further information for a particular member by clicking on the CKAP# link in that table and in the next page which opens.
Please let me ( ) know if you notice any errors in the distances reported.

Meanwhile, I am in the process of databasing virtually everything that is on the site. This will make it much easier to manage the CKAP web site in the future and to keep your totals accurate. Until the databasing is complete, some of the older manually maintained pages may contain old information.

CKAP News 13th. August 2009

After 15 years plus it’s time for “Sir” James to take a well deserved rest and allow new younger board members to take over control of CKAP.

I do this reluctantly as it has become a habit to live in my basement office during the winter.

Paul Dicks # 1206 from Mississauga , Ontario will become the new CKAP Coordinator and starting with your 2009 logs, all logs and mail should be sent to Paul. I will be there to help Paul if needed during this first year, longer if required but hope that Paul will be on his own starting with the year 2010

Celia McInnis # 1159 from Ottawa , Ontario will become CKAP’s new webmaster. Celia McInnis will be improving the web page and taking it to the next level by adding a database which will replace the yearly list of current members by km. With a database and Celia’s skills, members will be able to add their own km directly to the CKAP web page and a yearly history of each member will become available to each member. This work is far beyond my ability but Celia has been doing this for years by keeping data on Ottawa time trials and is very qualified in this field.

“Sir” James will be responsible for ordering all awards and CKAP jerseys as required, printing all certificates, mailing awards, jerseys and hard copy of the CKAP annual report.

I’m sure that we will have a few bumps in the road with these major changes and I ask CKAP members to bear with us till we have it all sorted out. You will now have three qualified members doing the job that “Sir” James did alone and I know CKAP will improve by sharing the work and new ideas.

Please direct your 2009 cycling logs toPaul M. Dicks plus any funds payable to CKAP. Log and brochure addresses will be changed along with the list of CKAP board members on the web.

This would be a good time if you are connected to the internet to change from a hard paper copy of the annual report, to the web version, which is in colour and PDF format. Please contact James if you wish to change.

“Sir” James wishes to thank all CKAP members who have supported me during the 15 years plus that I was involved as your coordinator and hope that you will also support our new directors in the same way. It was a great trip with no complaints along the way and it’s not over yet,
Cheer:-))) “Sir” James

Hi, Sir James!

I would like to ride a fast 1200k at the Granite Anvil this coming August. I am hoping that you might know some local folks who are not already involved in volunteering with the organization of the Granite Anvil who might be interested in driving my ‘stuff’ (clothes, food, drink) from one control to another.
Here is the link to the Granite Anvil 1200 Km

AGM – 2009 - Main Points

Canadian Kilometer Achiever Program (CKAP)
New co-ordinator/webmaster wanted
“Sir” James Wilson announced his resignation as Co-ordinator at the CKAP annual general meeting on May 6. After 15 years, he decided it was time to step down and let some “new blood” take over.
CKAP is now looking for a dedicated volunteer who would be willing to perform the following Co-ordinator functions:
• Receive and tally yearly logs
• Arrange engraving of trophies, plaques and medals
• Issue awards
• Order decals, badges and print certificates
• Order jerseys as need arises
• Maintain budget
• Maintain members’ files
• Maintain 5 CKAP Trophies
• Publish annual members’ report
• Promote CKAP

The Board passed a motion to split off the webmaster role from the Co-ordinator’s job and is looking for a volunteer with good web skills to maintain, update and possibly redesign the CKAP website.
Use link to CKAP Directors on left side of page if interested in becomming CKAP's next Co-odinator or Webmaster.

CKAP has a new secretary Sheila Ashcroft CKAP 1184 – Welcome aboard Sheila! Looks like a big win, win for CKAP.

CKAP will be one of the sponsors of the Ontario Randonneurs Granite Anvil 1200 km and will supply 85 CKAP brochures and decals to go in the package of each rider and volunteer.

CKAP has 69 gold and 27 silver old style CKAP badges (dark blue with silver or gold wire stitching) but no bronze to complete a set. We would like very much to sell these badges to CKAP members who didn’t purchase them when earned or member who would just like to have them. We will sell these badges at cost, $4.00 ea including postage, $2.00 extra if a certificate is requested, as postage would then be over $1.00. These badges will be disposed of if not purchased this fiscal year, end of February 2010. Members can purchase these badges even if they have yet to earn them and then purchase the newer version when they have reached the required km distance.

CKAP has 61 100% heavy duty cotton T-shirts which are not moving and we need cash if we are to purchase an updated version. These T-shirts have 14,000,000 km and counting printed in the design as their only problem as were now close to 21,000,000. It was decided that as we were selling the T-shirts at ½ price of only $10.00 that it was a good deal and we would not change the price. However James would like to see these T-shirts moved so we can put Charlie to work designing a new non dated T-shirt design and place an order. Please check out the CKAP web site for available sizes.

James will continue to serve as your CKAP Coordinator for as long as it takes to find a suitable replacement or replacements, which the CKAP board approves of to continue CKAP’s 35 year continually improving program.

CKAP No. 1255
CKAP News 26th. July 2007

This informatiom was put on the CKAP List Page earlier this year but I thought I would add to the "News" before deleting the original message.

1. A short while ago, someone raised the question of titanium bicycles for touring + randonneur cycling. For those folks living on Vancouver Island, please note that Fort Street Cycle (on Fort Street in Victoria) is now carrying LightSpeed titanium bicycles. I suspect they were influenced by the longevity of my 8 year old LightSpeed, which they keep in good working order; and, the number of VanIsle 1200 riders from the U.S. who were riding titanium bikes.

2. Saddle sores – I’ve been plagued by saddle sores ever since I first rode more than 160 k. I have a VERY large bag of ointments, creams, bandages, etc. to try and deal with the problem. The only thing that helped the pain, but not the saddle sore, was to use Lanacane (which includes a pain-killer). Michel Richard introduced this to me. However, it did not prevent the saddle sores from occurring.

A couple of years ago I spotted a product called Body Glide in the U.S., then discovered that it was available at Frontrunners Running store on Vancouver Street in Victoria. I’ve been using the product for the last couple of years. It comes in several sizes of containers that look like deodorant sticks. Easy to carry and no mess!! I apply it to my body and my cycling shorts prior to riding, then re-apply every 200-300 km.. Saddle sores have ceased to be a problem (now I can concentrate and truly enjoy the exquisite pain emanating from the bottom of my foot!)

Most running stores carry Body Glide (eg. Frontrunners and the Running Room- Victoria) and some bicycle stores (eg. Fort Street Cycle - Victoria).

Note: James has purchased Body Glide at the Runnung Room in the Glebe on Bank Street Ottawa, Ontario.

3. Make your cycling mileage ‘count’ --- Check out

  • The Ultra Marathon Cycling Association"s (UMCA) Year Rounder
  • The Canadian Kilometer Achiever Program (CKAP)

    4. Obtain a useful free weekly e-newsletter from:
Road Bike Rider As the title suggests the newsletter is full of interesting information regarding road biking. Former Bicycling Editor and long distance cyclist, Ed Pavelka, is the man behind ‘roadbikerider.

May each of you achieve your cycling goals for this year – the prime goal being to enjoy your cycling!

    CKAP Coordinator
    CKAP News 10th. March 2008

CKAP held its annual board meeting 09 May 2007 and three items where passed that should be of interest to members.

Due to the increase in cost for postage, engraving, medals, badges, internet service and office supplies and the fact that we were selling jerseys at cost prices, which has left no funds to place orders and made the daily operations of CKAP dependent on other mean of funds, the board voted to increase the membership fee and paid awards effective July 1, 2007. This is the first increase since 1994.

Registration fee: $25.00 to $30.00 - USA members $35.00 USD - UK members $40.00 USD
Incentive badges: $6.00 to $8.00 - including postage and handling, one certificate per year
Incentive medals: $10.00 to $18.00 - including postage, handling, one certificate per year
CKAP short sleeve jerseys: $70.00 to $75.00 - including postage and handling on all orders.
New style short sleeve jerseys: $80.00
CKAP long sleeve jerseys: $80.00 to $85.00
CKAP reflective bike decals: $2.00 to $3.00
CKAP T-shirts remain the same price $10.00 until a new order is placed.
Note no charge of shipping and handling a saving of $3.00 to help clear this order.
All CKAP's major awards remain free but require your photo.

The cost of medals have doubled which include engraved disc, ribbon, certificate, postage and taxes.

All members living outside Canada must pay the same amount in US dollars to help pay for the extra cost in shipping.

CKAP recognizes that some members goals and ablities are greater than others. For this reason CKAP has created the 25,000 km plaque made available to qualifying members at the cost of $35.00 each. postage paid. This award is there for members who feel that they require this plaque and for them it was a hard earned effort to reach, and 100,000 km is just to far between awards for them.

    How it works:
25,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted - must purchase gold medal and certificate at $18.00
50,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted
75,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted
100,000 km plaque free - Bruce Timmermans 100,000 Km Club Member, name on trophy
125,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted
150,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted
175,000 km plaque $35.00 ea. if wanted
200,000 km plaque free - Bruce Timmermans 100,000 Km Club Member, name on trophy
To continue through your life cycle.

CKAP has ordered new Incentive Program patches (badges) from NYA Enterprises
The new patch will have a light blue background with a red maple leaf and will include the word cycling . These patches will look the same as the medals except the white will be light blue.
There are no bronze badges left. Members who have aready received the older style patch will receive the same style patch for silver and gold until they are all used. First award members will recieve the new patch so that your set remains the same.

The patches have arrived and they look great! Can't wait to add a gold patch to a red ball cap.

"Sir" James is pleased to announce that Illustrator Mike Rapsey under the pen name of
"Sey Ottawa" has agreed to supply CKAP with his view of cycling in the form of a monthly cartoon which will be at the head of the CKAP News page.

Member with a sharp eye may notice that the hyphen is starting to disappear on the CKAP web page. Reason is that it was a question on the annual cycling log a few years back and members voted to have it removed. However, until we restyle the CKAP jersey the hyphen on the jersey and the CKAP List Page address will remain. We will always be Canadian - pause- Kilometer Achiever Program.

The CKAP brochure in PDF format on the CKAP web site has been updated to include the question on how you would like to receive your CKAP annual report; by web page address in PDF format or by mail in black and white hard copy. It's 2007 version has "Sir" James's new email address and the new prices for CKAP as of July 01 2007.

"Sir" James has now got the hang on how to make multiple page PDF files which is nice as he can now correct the gremlins that now and then sneak in. So if possible my advice is to go PDF for the annual report (in living colour) if you can, but wait a week or two before printing and hopefully all the gremlins will have been purged from the report. Just let James know if you want to switch from mailed black and white hard copy. James will send you a PDF version to insure that you can view and print etc before switching. .

Lastly "Sir" James wishes Michael Poplawski -1082, a belated, all the best as he steps down as CKAP's West Coast Director and a welcome to Raymond Parker our new West Coaat Director who as a professional photographer has supplied CKAP with several great photos of our west coast members and had the honor of presenting Ken Bonner with his three awards. May you both complete the 2007 PBP in fine style.

James checked the 115 links on the CKAP web page using 800 X 600 resolutions and found 62 fit with 53 needing to scroll horizontally to view the whole page. You may prefer 1024 X 768 as the text is smaller.

    To change your resolution setting in Windows;
    Open the the "Control Panel"
    Click on "Display" then "Settings"
Move the marker on the rule to the far left for 800 X 600 - next mark to the right is 1024 X 768
Choose your setting and click on "Apply" and that all folks.

Note: this is basic information for a person who may not be aware of resolution settings.

The CKAP Yahoo Groups List Page is so members across the country can communicate with each other on cycling matters. It should be a form for the experienced to help the new cyclist.

New members can't subscribe themselves as it's a closed page for "Members Only". For this reason we have a List Page Moderator, Paul Dicks CKAP # 1206 see Photo Gallery 18, who subscribes all new members. In the past any member could unsubscribe by clicking on a link at the bottom of each list page message. This is no longer the case with Yahoo.

I received this newspaper article from a friend yesterday ."Florrie" Graham Bridgman rode with us Carolina Cyclers when she was a kid, and growing up. she married and moved to Alabama. I did not realize that she was still cycling, but looks like she is a tough lady on a bicycle. I'm sure Woody (Frank A. "Woody" Graham III CKAP # 274) is proud of her.
It's just hard for me to believe that she is 41 years old and the mother of two children.
Oh, well 70 is not old any more.

    Florence Graham Bradley

Triumphantly pedaled her bicycle into Phenix City Saturday as the first woman to complete a sanctioned ride across Alabama.

    Dear James,
Enclosed is the cheque to order Judy's CKAP short sleeve jersey in a medium.
    (has received)

As I said in the e-mail, Judy had a Scleroderma renal crisis on December 2nd. which almost took her, which included 3 days in the ICU in Belleville and 4 days in the Cardiac ICU in Kingston. Scleroderma is a member of the Arthritis family, there is no cure and it is a progressive disease that builds collagens under the skin. It can also attack the heart / lung and kidneys. Judy's Rheumatologist is super pleased with her results and progress.

I thought I'd share with you her charts considering that she will probably get a blood transfusion tomorrow, due to an ulcer that resists curing. This is from when she got permission to get on the trainer on Feb. 23rd. Hopefully things will get straightened around next week on her 4th. Endoscopy and Cauterization and she hopes to get on the road very soon.

    Respectfuully yours,
    Larry Ducommun

Larry and I were really upset to hear about your accident. from reports it appears that you are doing much better but still have a long road to go. Remember if Lance can do it, so can you.

James is doing much better, I'm home on the weekends and I managed to weed the front lawn this weekend with a long handle weeder although I walked like a puppet, very jerky, but I managed to finish.

On December 2nd. 2004 I had a serious Scleroderma renal crisis that almost took me. Thanks to the Dr's and staff at both Belleville General Hospital I.C.U. and the C.C.U. at Kingston General I survived. there was no damage done to my heart and lungs, accredited to my excellent level of fitness that I have maintained for the last 20 years with the CKAP program and walking

Since my release from the hospital I started cycling with permission from my doctors, in the basement and since Feb. 23rd. I have cycled 1,500 km.Some of these kilometers were tougher than others as I have had Gave's Syndrome (blood vessel leakers in the duodenum) which caused my red blood cell count to drop resulting in 5 transfusions. The condition has since been corrected and I could have been getting some km's on the road, However, the extreme heat has relegated this season to be in the basement but as you can see I have surpassed 1,500 km.

I am really anxious to get back on the road and when everything is settled down I will.
The bike in the basement makes me stronger every day and I can now ride 13 km in 30 minutes. So when my CKAP mileage comes in and it looks like I haven't been doing much you'll know I didn't give up.

We really hope that you continue to feel better, are able to get back on your bike and we will keep you in our prayers.

    Respectfully yours,
    Judy Ducommun
    CKAP 834

James hopes to be able to get a few rides on my bike this year, but I have to learn to walk before I can ride.

James and all CKAP members wish Judy continued recovery and the hope you can put it all behind you and will be able to hit the road with Larry in the near future.

James has received 247 - 2007 logs to date. James will try to accommodate all he receives but once the annual report goes to press and is converted to PDF for the web page that's it. Any log arriving after that will go into the data base and will show on next years annul report, plus your km will not count towards the Hewes Challenge, so please try and get your log in on time.

    Noted Problem by James:
Members using Excel formatted cycling logs are not deleting the "0" from "Grand Total Km at year end 2007 = 0" and adding their Grand total. The logs are formatted to include this total in the 2008 Gand Total once it's put into the past Grand Total. Please remember to put this figure in the same cell that you deleted the "0"on your 2008 logs. Don't know your last years Grand Total? All current members Grand Totals are listed on the CKAP web page. Click on "Photo Index" then Galleries 9 to 16 Current members. Each page shows the first and last member's CKAP number.

Members using Excel formatted logs then filling them out with pen? If you can open the Excel log you should be able to fill it out using your computer. Having problems? There are instructions on the page, or send an e-mail to James with your problem. Don't have Excel? Then scroll past the Excel logs and instructions and you will find below the same logs in PDF format which can be opened with an Adobe Reader which most computer have. Don't have one, or it's not working because it's out of date? Then go on line and download the Adobe Reader from the same page.

    Please, Please, Please
Include your CKAP number on your cycling log and when sending me email messages.
CKAP is in it's 33rd. year and all files are by CKAP number. I would like to think that I know everybody's name and number, but in fact were growing fast and the most stressful thing for James is searching for your names so I can get your CKAP number and update your files.
We all have names and were very proud of them but please include your CKAP number. while your at it.

If you haven't sent James a cycling photo of yourselves please do. One photo is like a thousand words and it's the way we get to know each other.

The CKAP domain remains with Mondenet (web page) but James has moved on and CKAP's internet server is now Primus. At the time of writing spam is no longer a problem. However James still want you to put "CKAP" first in the subject title of your email to insure you won't get deleted in error.

    Hi CKAP Members,
James has created 2006 - 2007 and 2008 Excel formatted cycling logs. You will have to delete the "0" and type in your grand total from last year in the same cell. Address information, adding information To cells which already have information in them is best done using the formula bar at the top of the screen. all cells are left formatted so click on the left side of the cell such as "CKAP #" on the top left side of the log. this will put CKAP # in the formula bar and then place your cursor, using your mouse, beside CKAP # in the formula bar and type your number. then Ckick on "Name" and repeat the same procedure. You will see that your information will be the same style and will fit the cell. Once past the address informaton the cell are whole line cells and you must click on the row number on the left and put the whole line into the formula bar to add your cycling clubs and check marks.

These Excel files have been saved in 5.0/95 Excel version which means that most Excel users should be able to open them. These files are located above the PDF logs, click on the Cycling Logs Link at the top left of all pages, except Photo Galleries. Once saved you can update the file to your version of Excel However, James has Excel Version 2003. If you plan on sending the log by e-mail don't save in a higher version or James will not be able to open.

At the end of year 2006 you can then send me the completed log as an attachment to an e-mail. Page Two should also be included. Or you can put the information in the body of your e-mail if sending by e-mail.

If you have earned awards in the incentive part of CKAP. You can print the log and mail along with your cheque, payable to CKAP.

The cycling logs at the CKAP web site in PDF format are for members who don't have Excel.

The Atlantic Canada Bicycle Rally (ACBR) is the largest and most enjoyable cycling event in Atlantic Canada, yet small enough to allow CKAP members to enjoy each others company.

The annual ACBR is organised by CKAP Director Gary Conrod CKAP 232 and happens with the help of his many volunteers.

Please use the "Link" provided and enjoy a really great weekend bicycle rally each year.

26th. Annual ASSAULT on Mt. Mitchell is 102 miles and over 11,000 cumulative feet in climbing. The 2001 Assault had LIGHTNING, torrential RAIN, and really big HAIL !!! It was SO MUCH FUN !!! We have a strange idea of fun. this year I'm trying to get a few other hand cyclist to try it out. This was my sixth Assault with my arms and I'm the only hand cyclist to ever do the Assault or attempt it to date.

"Short Stories" now contains a profile on Haynesworth Van Epps CKAP 1098 who is our Director of the CKAP - Handcycling Program. On July 2, 1990 Van and his friends were riding near Hollywild Zoo in Inman SC. A reckless driver ran a stop sign and crashed into Van and another rider. Van was dragged 656 feet and sustained multiple injuries.
